Margaret Marie Slutz Loyd, 93, of Amarillo died Friday, Jan. 28, 2011.

Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors Ivy Chapel, 2800 Paramount Blvd., with the Rev. Stephen Gaines, pastor of Covenant Fellowship Church, officiating.

Marie was born Dec. 29, 1917, in Sheridan Lake, Colo., to Charles Edgar Slutz and Elizabeth Agnes Redder Slutz. At a very young age, she moved with her family to a farm north of Vega.

She was valedictorian of the Vega High School class of 1934. She married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth R. Loyd, the same year.

She was a very special, loving and supporting stay-at-home mom who was an excellent "scratch" cook and baker of great breads and desserts. Her home and dining table were open to anyone who happened by.

She provided room and board to a number of young family members and friends who attended Amarillo College or worked. Over the years, she opened her home to a young photographer from Japan, a young man from India, several fellow employees of the Amarillo Public Library and too many others to name.

She was a lifelong Methodist and exemplified the love of Christ in her daily life. She was a lover of classical music, great literature and art. She supported the arts community in Amarillo for many years.

Marie retired as book selection librarian from the Amarillo Public Library in 1982 after more than 20 years of service. She loved her job, especially reading the many book reviews.

The family would like to thank the very caring staffs at BSA Hospice, Harrington Assisted Living and Childers Place.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Melvin Slutz, Raymond Slutz, Carl Slutz, Glen Slutz and Ralph Slutz; four brothers-in-law, Lewis R. Loyd, Emory Loyd, Donald Loyd and David Loyd; four sisters-in-law, Mary Louise Loyd, Fern Loyd, Geneva Lindsey and Marian Loyd; a great-grandson, Bradley Shane Brown; a great-great-grandson, Jacob Brown; a nephew, Richard Burns; and the father of her children, Kenneth R. Loyd.

Survivors include two sons, Bruce Loyd and wife Dena of Albuquerque, N.M., and Paul Loyd and wife Judith of Pampa; two daughters, Kay Bynum and husband Bill, and Janiece Bloch and husband Melvin, all of Amarillo; two sons by choice, Richard Holmes and wife Modena Genois Holmes, and Hansford Fred Johnson and wife Jana, all of Amarillo; four grandsons, Dee Bynum of Plano, David Loyd and wife Gretchen of Gainesville, Fla., Chad Bloch and wife Morgan of Knoxville, Tenn., and Matt Holmes and wife Lucy of Amarillo; six granddaughters, Dena Brown and husband Danny, Dawn Henderson, Mica Ashby and husband Randy, and Marcie Holmes, all of Amarillo, Ann Elizabeth Douglas and husband Dustin of Pampa, and Michele Gugenheim of Canyon; two sisters, Frances De Vito and husband Nick of Amarillo and Jeanette Treadaway and husband Carrol of Mineola; a brother, Marvin Slutz and wife Clara of Vega; four sisters-in-law, Carolyn Richardson and husband Wayne of Vega, Margaret Burns and husband Lloyd of Amarillo, Doris Loyd of Borger, and Alice Kirk and husband John of Redondo Beach, Calif.; a brother-in-law, Calvin Lindsey of Oklahoma City; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and 32 loving Slutz and Loyd family nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to The Friends of the Amarillo Public Library, 413 S.E. Fourth Ave., Amarillo, TX 79101; or BSA Hospice, P.O. Box 950, Amarillo, TX 79105.
