STEPHEN DEWITT ALLEN
1936 - 2012

Stephen DeWitt Allen was born May 17, 1936 in Lubbock, Texas, the youngest son of Marguerite (Trowbridge) and Judge Robert Jarrett Allen. He passed on peacefully at home on April 15 in God's cocoon of comfort, peace, rest and love, as he described in a dream he had a month before his death at the age of 75.

He married Tommye Jean Wieland, the love of his life and his yellow rose of Texas, on June 22, 1957 in Dumas, Texas. The Allen family moved to Muskogee in 1960 where they made their home and raised their three children.

Steve retired from the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Oklahoma in 2002 after 42 years of service as the official court reporter, a job he valued highly and in which he excelled. He also established and managed, along with his wife, Allen Reporting Service, a successful private court reporting firm servicing southeastern Oklahoma.

Steve started swimming competitively at the age of 50 and became a champion swimmer, holding many national records in his age group. He was consistently in the top 10 nationally and won over 125 medals, including many gold, in U.S. Masters Swimming, National and World Senior Games, and Senior Olympics.

Steve was a loving and generous husband, father, brother, son and friend. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, Tommye; his sons DeWitt Allen and his life partner Kay Howell of Muskogee, Jon Allen and his wife Jaycee of Chula Vista, California; his daughter, Pamela Allen Becker and her husband Douglas of San Francisco, California; his grandchildren Jesse and Lindsey Allen of Muskogee; Neil, Jarrett, Nathan and Stephen Allen of Chula Vista; and Edan Allen Becker of San Francisco; brothers Robert Allen and his wife Annis of Austin, Texas, and Richard Allen and his wife Keith of Arlington, Texas; his sisters- and brothers-in-law Mary and Harry Drake of Grand Prairie, Texas, and Lou and Corky Dawson of Granbury, Texas, his nieces and nephews, and many other loving relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Morris Allen.

His life was an inspiration to his family, friends, fellow swimmers, co-workers and business associates. He is a hero to his grandchildren, who know he is watching over them and that he is proud of the unique and caring individuals they have all become.

Steve donated his body to the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. The family requests that memorial contributions be made in Steve's name to the Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma, payable to the OU Foundation, and mailed to Stephenson Cancer Center, PO Box 26901, 6th Floor, Oklahoma City, OK 73126-0901, for rhabdomyosarcoma research.

A memorial service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 20, 2012 at Grace Episcopal Church, 218 N. 6th Street, Muskogee, OK. with Rev. Greg Sinclair officiating.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Cornerstone Funeral Home and Crematory, 1830 North York Street, Muskogee, Oklahoma.
