Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 30th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 3, 1862, and was mustered in as a Private in Company F of the 20th Tennessee Calvary on September 17, 1862. He served through the December 1862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863.

Drake in Union GAR uniform. Photo courtesy of the family. Drake served during the Civil War ONLY with the 20th Penn. Cavalry (August 25, 1864 to June 19, 1865). Unfortunately, his lower gravestone was incorrectly inscribed "20 TENN. CAV."!

Gravesite of Union veteran Charles N. Drake. The lower Civil War gravestone was incorrectly inscribed "20 TENN CAV." It should have been "20 PENN CAV." Unfortunately, the error has been propagated from time to time, including here.

1890 Census (Cranford, NJ). Shows Charles N. Drake having served ONLY in the 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry (Co. F). Not to be confused, as done here, with "Charles Drake" buried in Rahway Cemetery, NJ, who served in the 30th NJ and died in 1911, not '16.

The Typographical Journal (1916) at p. 1010, showing service with 20th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Drake served ONLY with Pennsylvania troops, mostly in Philadelphia, from August 25, 1864, to June 19, 1865, according to his veterans pension file in DC.

Veteran Pension card at National Archives showing Drake's service with 20th Penn. Cavalry -- not "20 TENN CAV" as incorrectly carved on his lower gravestone! Shows widow Hannah receiving his pension in May 1916, upon his death.
