Milladore Farmer, Son Drowning Victims

P. Haffenbred Perishes Trying To Save Youth

Family Goes Bathing In Granite Pit, Son Goes In Over Depth, Father Rushes To Rescue And Both Drown

Auburndale, Wis., July 21—While the wife and mother and other members of the family watched helplessly, Paul Haffenbredl, 46, town of Milladore farmer, and his son, Paul Haffenbredl Jr., 20, drowned shortly after 8 p.m., last night in a deep pool in the Gruber granite pit four miles east and three miles north of Auburndale.

Father Attempts Rescue
Haffenbredl and his family had gone to the pit, which is only about two miles from their home, to bathe. Young Paul, who could swim a little, went in first but became frightened when he found himself over his depth. His father, who could not swim at all, hurried to his aid but was also pulled into the deep water and sank never to rise again. It was with great difficulty that Mrs. Haffenbredl was restrained from entering the water in a rescue attempt.

William Haffenbredl, 15, ran to summon aid, and C. W. Bluett, acting sheriff, and George R. Baker, county coroner, were notified and came from Wisconsin Rapids to assist in the search for the bodies of the drowned pair. The body of the son was found at 10:20 p.m., and that of his father at about 11 p.m. Roy Hook, cattle buyer from Medina, Ill., assisted by two Milladore men who probed with poles, were the finders. Where the bodies were found the water is 16 feet deep, it is stated.

Double Funeral Services
Double funeral services will be held at 9 a.m., Thursday at St. Mary’s Catholic church at Auburndale, Rev. Alois Zinthefer officiating. Interment will be made in the parish cemetery there. Mr. Haffenbredl was born on the farm where he has since resided, June 29, 1885. He was married in July, 1910 to Elizabeth Haupt. Paul Jr., was born at the same place on June 4, 1911.
