"OBITUARY of Bernice Carpenter. Rochester Post, Rochester, Minnesota, Friday, 20 March 1896. Copy obtained from the Olmstead County Historical Society by Mary McDowell 20 July 1984:

Death of Mrs. W.H. Carpenter

Mrs. W.H. Carpenter, whose home was at New York City, died at the home of her parents in St. Peter, Minn. of consumption. The parents of Mrs. Carpenter, Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Billingsley, were residents of Rochester for a number of years, and Mrs. Carpenter as a girl was well and favorably known. She leaves a bright, little daughter of ten [sic.] summers,* and also a husband. The deceased was an exemplary woman of high standing in the circle in which she moved. She was a true friend and a loving mother. The acquaintances of Mrs. Carpenter will be much grieved to learn of her demise.

[Note: her daughter was only two and a half years old. This is corroborated, as she is found in the 1900 census with her father.]

St. Peter Tribune, page 5, 25 March 1896, St. Peter, Minnesota:

Mr. Walter H. Carpenter, son-in-law of Mr. and Mrs. J.D.Billingsley, who arrived in this city on Friday last, called here by the death of his wife, having paid the last sad rites to his loving and devoted companion, returned to New York yesterday. He leaves his little two-and-half year old daughter in the care and keeping of her grandparents, knowing she will receive a mother’s care. The funeral of Mrs. Carpenter took place from the residence of her parents on Saturday moning, Rev. Thompson officiating."
