From Helena (MT) Independent Record 6/3/2004:

Edna Rose Schatz, wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, age 83, died peacefully on June 1, 2004, surrounded by her loving family at her Waterford home.

Her extended Waterford family was by her side too. They all have been a big part of her life since 2000.

Edna was born Dec. 27, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Leota and James Weaver. As a young child Edna resided in Minneapolis then moved to Montana where she attended school. She had many stories to share about going to school in the railroad cars after the earthquake.

On June 22, 1939, she married Frank Joseph Schatz in Great Falls. They operated the family ranch together until Frank's death in October 1984. She continued to be involved in the ranch operation until the time of her death.

While on the ranch, Edna cooked for about a dozen ranch/farm hands on a regular basis. When there was a full table of hungry people eating at the table, she truly was happy. She always enjoyed visiting with all of the hay customers and neighbors. Her hospitality and generosity was enjoyed by many. She always had a pot of coffee and a full cookie jar ready for them, she was known to many as the "cookie lady" or "Grandma Schatz."
