Gwendolyn Mae Street was born Feb 25, 1935, in Carter, OK, to parents Earl Lafayette and Lillie Mae Pilcher Street. She attended Carter School through the 11th grade, then opted to do her senior year at Central College in Kansas. It was at Central where she met the love of her life, Jerald Huntsinger. Gwen and Jerry married in Carter in August 1953, then moved to Illinois where Jerry attended seminary school. After that, Gwen and Jerry moved to Pleasanton, Kansas, where they pastored a Methodist Church.
In May, 1961, the couple welcomed their first son, Randall Earl Huntsinger. In May 1962, they welcomed another son, Kenton Emerson Huntsinger. After a few years in Kansas they moved to Ashland, VA, where they began an extensive restoration project on a colonial farmhouse. Gwen -- never one to back away from a challenge -- took on the task of learning electrical wiring, and rewired the entire house herself.
As her boys grew older, Gwen became interested in the field of psychology. She went back to college and earned her PhD. She soon had a successful clinical practice in Richmond, VA.
After partial retirement, Gwen became interested in learning how to paint china, a very challenging, fine art practiced by her aunt Betty Newman who had provided hand-painted tiles for Gwen's new kitchen. Gwen took to it like a fish to water. She soon joined a local branch of the World Organization of China Painters, where she later served a term as the VA WOCP state president. She competed every year at her state convention, and some of her work was chosen for display in the WOCP's museum, and published in their international magazine. Gwen traveled and studied with the modern masters at intensive workshops including the Art Institute in Arizona and Oklahoma, and Cazenovia in New York.
In 2008, Gwen received the news that the breast cancer she had previously whipped several years prior had returned. She fought it hard for the next year. She passed away at home, surrounded by her family, on June 9, 2009.
She is survived by her husband Jerry; son Randy and wife Cathy Huntsinger; son Kent and wife Debbi Huntsinger; grandchildren Madaline, Katy, and Kent Huntsinger Jr; brother Vern Street and wife Sara of Sapulpa, OK; two nieces, Kerri Manuel and Sherry Barrett of Sapulpa OK; and a host of grandnieces and grandnephews, and other extended family members.
