Born March 9, 1923, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., he was the son of the late George B. and Mary E. Beatty Sipes, and the husband of the late Wilda Olive Montgomery Sipes, who died December 5, 2006.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946.
He retired, in 1984, as a supervisor for Fairview Orchards, near Hancock.
He was a member of the Webster B. Harrison Post # 26 American Legion, in Hancock, and the Loyal Order of the Moose, in Berkeley Springs, W.Va.
He is survived by three daughters, Evanveline J. Shutt of Grove City, Oh., Betty L. Bowman, and Debbie D. Truax, both of Hancock; one son, J. Marvin Sipes, of Williamsport, Md.; two sisters, Alice G. Lease, of Paw Paw, W.Va., and Pearl Hartman of Keyser, W.Va.; sixteen grandchildren; and twenty-seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Junior Sipes, and Bernard H. (Buck) Sipes; one daughter, Patsy L. Landers; three brothers, Elmer, Percy and Marvin Sipes; one sister, Nellie Hartman; grandson, Christopher Landers; granddaughter, Brenda Ray; and daughter-in-law, Grace Sipes.
A service will be held Thursday, April 19, at 1:00 p.m., at the Grove Funeral Home, in Hancock. Rev. John Close will officiate. Burial, with military graveside rites by the Tri-State Honor Guard, will be in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park, in Hagerstown, Md.
The family will receive friends at the Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m.
