He enlisted in Company E of the 1st AL Cav., USV on March 1, 1863, in Glendale, Mississippi, and was discharged March 1, 1864. He was the son of Simeon and Sarah Mills and brother of Jonathan Mills who also served in the 1st Alabama Cavalry, USV.
Zachariah was granted an 80 acre homestead in Hempstead County, Arkansas June 14, 1904 by then President Theodore Roosevelt. He applied for US Civil War Pension August 1, 1890. His wife Indiana refiled as his widow September 9, 1907.Co E 1st Ala Cav CSA
