MARTIN COUCH was born about 1784 in New Rivers, Ashe Co., N.C. and died in 5-1856 in Hazard, Perry Co., Ky. He was the son of John Couch of Ashe Co. and possible Mary Boone or the Elizabeth James who married Patrick Campbell.

Martin was married to Sarah HALL about 1804 in Ashe Co., NC. Sally was born in 1785 in Va. and died after 1850 in Hazard, Perry Co. She was the daughter of John Hall and Mary ‘Polly’ Hash. In “Rugged Trail to Appalachia” by Mary Brewer, it was said that Martin and Sally had 16 children. Martin’s son, Ira states that his father had 7 sons in his Dickey Diary interview but he names only six of them. The interview was recorded by the Rev. Dickey as follows:

Date: April 27, 1898, Place is Big Creek, KY. PAGE 2277: "I was born in ............Co., KY 1812. My father Martin Couch came to Ky. from New River (on Holston). Old John Campbell's wife was my father's sister. Old James Lewis' wife was another. My father settled at the Mouth of Lick Branch in Perry County. He had seven sons, Joe, Thomas, Eli, John, Charlie, Ira. All these are dead but me. He had a brother John who came with him. John had sons: William, Andy, Lige, Dick, the latter died young. My father also had another brother James whose son lives in Clay --- "Stutter" John. My grandfather John Couch came with them.... My mother was Sally Hall, Aunt of Philip Hall. They came a long time before I was born. My father was born before his parents came here."
