Victim of The Camon Band Massacre - Mass Murder in Winfield in 1903 - Gilbert Twigg

Funeral of Port Smith
Port B. Smith was born July 10, 1884, and died August 14, 1903, aged nineteen years, one month and four days. In that awful fusilade of death last Thursday night a buck shot penetrated his head about the left eye. It is remarkable that with such a wound the young man should have lived about seventeen hours.

The deceased was a loving and dutiful son and brother, and was loved much by his associates. Many young men, among whom he was a prime favorite, can attest his cheery disposition and his high character. Father and mother, four sisters and two brothers, mourn his untimely death.

The funeral services were held Saturday at 3 o'clock at the family residence about two miles south of town, conducted by Rev. J.D. Botkin in the presence of a large company of sympathizing neighbors and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and family have the deepest and sincerest sympathy of the entire community.
