John C Canty, a veteran of the civil war and a member of the Corcoran Guard of Buffalo, was instrumental in surveying and providing intelligence for the Fenian Brotherhood planning their Fenian Raid into West Canada from Buffalo.

Canty purchased land along the border of Canada, in Fort Erie, Ontario, about 6 months before the June 2, 1866 Fenian Raid. He worked as an employee of the Grand Trunk Railway and was able to survey the area for the Fenian Brotherhood, operating as a Fenian Spy, supplying maps and intelligence regarding militia troops. Canty was the Chief Intelligence Officer for the 7th Regiment Buffalo, I.R.A.

Often mistakingly stated that Major Canty died at the Battle of Ridgeway, he did not. His commander Fenian General John O'Neill's after action report commends Canty for his aid and does not mention his death, but does mention other Fenian officers who were killed or wounded. He went on to move out to Oakland, CA and died at the age of 72 years old of heart disease.
