James E. "Jim" Middleton, age 90, of Lafayette, passed away on Tuesday, April 17, 2012. He was a devoted husband to Madge, loving dad to Jim, Lynn, and Barbara and a father figure to many more. Jim's unconditional love and support of his family, friends and community were unwavering and his zest for life was unparalleled. Always positive, always smiling, his infectious personality was experienced by all who knew him.

Born October 11, 1921, in Ridgeville, IN, he was the son of the late Warren and Edna Fraze Middleton. Before serving in the Air Force from 1942 to 1945, Jim attended Indiana University.

On May 6, 1943, Jim married Madge M. McFadden in Decatur, IN, and she preceded him in death on June 24, 2010. He was a manufacturer's representative for 4 years and then worked in sales for General Electric for 31 years, retiring in 1981. He was the recipient of the 1977 GE Gerald Philleppe Award for Distinguished Public Service.

Jim was a life member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the American Legion, Past President and 7-year member of the Jaycees where he received the 1957 Jaycee Distinguished Service Award. He also served 3 terms on The Lafayette School Board where he was a former President, was President of The Vinton PTA and was an original 1968 Ivy Tech board member, where he served for 12 years. Jim loved the theater and performed with the Lafayette Little Theater, now known as the Civic Theater where he was a former Chairman of the Board. Jim and his late wife were supporters of the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra, holding season tickets for many years.

Surviving is a son, Ret. Colonel James M. Middleton and his wife Linda and two daughters, Lynn Middleton and Barbara Middleton and her partner Nancy Strack. Three grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive. Jim was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Thomas Middleton and Major George Middleton.
