Mrs. Simms was born August 21, 1915 in Swain County, NC, and was a daughter of the late Joshua Albert and Sanna Garland Crisp. She was preceded in death by her brother Earl Crisp of Sycamore, Ohio, sister Pearl Crisp Poindexter of Tampa, Fl., Daughter and Son in Law Beverly Nunn and Arthur Wayne Ballard of Orlando, Fl., and son Russell Edward "Butch" Simms, Jr of Tampa, Fl. She was married to the late Russell Edward Simms, with whom she owned the Mountaineer Buffet Restaurant in Maggie Valley, NC. She lived previously in Tampa, FL, where she was a volunteer with the Red Cross and the Cancer Society.
After moving to the Asheville area to be near her grandson Terry, she volunteered with the First Lady's Prayer Breakfasts and was also lovingly involved with the Foster Grandparent Program. Mrs. Simms attended Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church and loved to travel making several trips to the Holy Land in addition to participating in numerous classes held at the Billy Graham Training Center-The Cove in Asheville. Mrs. Simms was a devout Christian and walked closely with her Lord each day.
She is survived by three grandsons: Terry Ballard and his wife Kathy of Asheville, NC, David Ballard of Avon, IN., and James Ballard of Tulsa, OK., as well as nieces, Caroline Yowell and Roma Gayle Spencer of Tampa, Fl., along with many friends and the family of Granddaughter in Law Kathy, all of whom she loved very much.
Terry and Kathy wish to thank the staffs of St Joseph's Hospital and The Brentwood Care Facility as well as Dr. James Puckett and Dr. Barton Pascal for their care and compassion for our grandmother during her illness.
