Joseph Craft Clewell was born 03 Aug 1760 in Plainfield Township, Northampton County, Pennsylvania; one of twelve children born to George Craft and Anna Maria (Kuechley) Clewell, Sr.

Joseph was first united in marriage 07 Jul 1790 in Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania with Maria Magdalena Knauss; daughter of Sebastian Heinrich and Anna Catherine (Transue) Knauss.

Joseph served his country during the American Revolution, a Private in 3 Company, 2nd Battalion, Pennsylvania Militia.

Joseph and Maria were the parents of seven children:

1. Samuel Frederick (1791-1797)
2. Johannes "John" born 1793 married Lydia Romig
3. Maria Catharine (1795-1798)
4. George Gottfried (1796-1801)
5. Beata born and died 1798
6. Anna Louise born 1800 married Andrew Vogenitz
7. Jacob born and died 1803

Maria passed away 10 Jul 1803 in Emmaus, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania at the age of 41 years. She was laid to rest in God's Acre Moravian graveyard in Emmaus, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.

Joseph was next united in marriage (#2) Elisabeth Transue; daughter of Martin and Christina (Ehrenhardt) Liebert.

Joseph and Elisabeth were the parents of nine children:
