Thomas and Gideon came west by train to San Francisco and then by boat to Portland, Oregon. They settled in Sauvies Island where Thomas served as a postmaster. Then Vancouver, Clark County, Washington in 1871.

Thomas Summers Bought a ranch on East mill Plain 10 miles east of Vancouver, Clark County, Oregon in the late 1800s. He build a home for his family. Emily and Jacob Ernest, Daughter and Son-in-Law, moved from Sauvies Island, Oregon about 1900 then Thomas died and took over the ranch
