Elmer B. Center, Business Man, is Claimed by Death

Elmer B. Center, 57, one of Sandusky's best known citizens, died suddenly at the Center Hotel, W. Market-st, Wednesday morning at 8 o'clock. Death was attributed to apoplexy. While he had not been in the best of helath for some time, Mr. Center was up and around from day to day and, as late as Monday when a carbuncle began causing him some annoyance, was on the streets about his business. For more than 35 years Mr. Center was in the plumbing and heating business. For fourteen years, assisted by Mrs. Center, he conducted the Center Hotel which he owned. He was a native of Sandusky. All his life Mr. Center was interested in music which he took up early in boyhood. He first played for the Belle Brook orchestra, organized in 1893. He played with the W. H. Scouten concert band in 1894. At the close of the summer season of 1894, Mr. Center went to Akron to play at one of the theaters. From there, with John Trischman, jr., he went on the road with a well-known minstrel troupe. In 1895, he returned to Sandusky and since had been a member of E.B. Ackley's band. He also played with the Shrine Band of Toledo and was a member of Geo. F Anderson's Philharmonic Orchestras. For the past two years he had been flutist in the Masonic orchestra, having attended rehearsal as late as last Thursday evening.

Surviving Mr. Center are Mrs. Center, a sister of Charles Thiem, New York Central Ry. agent who died last May; a daughter, Miss Thelma Center, at home; a son, Clark Center of Gary, Ind.; two uncles, Fred and Albert Bauer, and an aunt, Mrs. A.C. Thiem, all of Sandusky, besides many other relatives and friends. Mrs. Center's mother died a little more than a year ago.

Fraternally, Mr. Center was identified with Perseverance Lodge, F. & A.M., and the Sandusky Chapter and Council, Masonic bodies; the Sandusky Council, United Commercial Travelers, and the Master Plumbers Association.
