Pioneer Dies Near Gonzales
Mrs. Emily Pugh, pioneer resident of the Fair View district near Gonzales, died suddenly shortly after midnight Tuesday, following a heart attack which she suffered a few minutes previously. Her son, Mr. Weaver W. Pugh, and his wife, were with her when she died.
Mrs. Pugh was the widow of Mr. Samuel O. Pugh, who preceded her in death two years. She came to California from Iowa when a child of eight with her mother, Mrs. Nancy Moon, and six brothers and sisters. Much of the journey was made on foot beside the caravan of wagons that left Augusta, Iowa, on April 1, 1860, and arrived in Eldorado county, California, the same year. The family first settled in that region and engaged in gold mining, and later moved to the Pajaro valley and then to the Guadalupe ranch near Gonzales. The remainder of the family settled there in 1869.
She was married to Mr. Samuel Pugh on October 14, 1874, and for most of her married life had resided in the Fair View district. Of the eight children born of this union seven remain: Mr. Weaver W. Pugh of the family home, Mrs. Grace Van Scoy, Mr. Reuben Pugh, Mr. Delmar Pugh, Mrs. Daisy Kelly, Mrs. Alice Whitcher, all of Gonzales, and Mrs. Effie Stalnaker of San Luis Obispo. Also surviving are the following grandchildren: Mr. Arthur Van Scoy, Mrs. L. Weber, Miss Althea Van Scoy, Mr. Irvine H. Stalnaker, Mrs. Eugene Reese and Mrs. Myrtle Pugh Twisselman, and nine great grandchildren: Richard, David and James Stalnaker, Doris and Arthur B. Van Scoy, Dorothy, Kathleen, Jean and Corneilus Reese.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon from the Salinas Funeral parlors, followed by interment in the Gonzales cemetery. (The Californian, Salinas, CA, April 27, 1937)
