James Jackson Bowen was born August 18, 1819 in Bulloch County, Georgia, son of Elisha and Penelope (Everett) Bowen, both born in North Carolina. He is the brother of Robert (1804), Debra (1805), Sarah Hunter (1807), Macy Anne (1811), Emmaline L. (1812), Silas Elisha (1815) and John Hunter (1817) Bowen.

On June 9, 1842, he married Susannah Smith. They had 10 children in their Bowen family including Mary Amelia "Nicy" (1844); Rebecca Elizabeth (1846); Elisha Millington (1848); James Milton (1851); Fanny J (1855); William Gaulden (1857); Mary Jane (1860); Martha Elizabeth (1861); General Jackson (1863) and Sarah Sally (1865) Bowen. As the family lived in Bulloch County, James J. Bowen worked as a farmer.

In 1880, the Bowen family lived in Sink Hole, Bulloch County, Georgia, including James and Susan, son, General J., daughters, Martha and Sally, and, living with them, Martha Davis.

On July 24, 1897, James Jackson Bowen, age 77 years, 11 months and 6 days, died in Bulloch County and was buried in the Bowen Family Cemetery, near Statesboro, in Bulloch County, Georgia.
