Civil War Heroine: In July 1863, Union Troops under the command of Colonel John Toland camped near Rocky Dell, in Tazewell County, Virginia, which was the home of Molly Tynes. Col. Toland and his troops were planning to attack The Railroad near Wytheville, the lead mines near Austinville and the salt mines near Saltville. Learning of this plan, 26-year old Mary Elizabeth "Molly" Tynes left on horseback in the early evening of July 17, 1863 and rode, a distance of about 40-miles, across the mountains and valleys of Southwest Virginia to warn the Confederates around Wytheville. As a result of her daring ride Colonel Toland and his troops were defeated and the vital mines and supply route were saved.
