Mrs. Sarah E. Stevens, Pioneer Dies

Mrs. Sarah E. Stevens, a resident of El Dorado Springs since the founding of this city, died Monday evening at the Martha Chambers nursing home after a long illness. The immediate cause of her death was due to a fractured hip which she suffered at her home June 13.

Sarah Ellen Johnson, daughter of Francis and Tempy Johnson, was born at Appleton City, Mo., April 7, 1861. She was the youngest child and last survivor of a large family. Her father was one of the pioneer Christian preachers of Western Missouri, and she was brought up in the atmosphere of crusading activity for making that church a factor in the life of life in the community.

Frail and delicate from birth, she came with her parents to El Dorado Springs in search of health, before there was any town here to speak of. They camped in the region now built up near the junction of Hickory and Main Street. From that time her entire life was in El Dorado Springs.

She married 1894 to James H. Stevens, who passed away in 1920. Her married life was an usually happy and congenial one.

Her only surviving relatives are a stepson, Jas. E. Stevens, formerly of Rich Hill, and several nieces and nephews.

She was a charter member of the First Christian Church of El Dorado Springs, and some of the first meetings were held in her father's home. She had been closely identified with the church ever since, as long as she was able being an active worker. The church was so large a part of her life that there was not much room for other things. Even after she was closely confined by illness and age, she continued to carry on.

Funeral services will be at the Christian church this Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. R. A. Blalock officiating. Burial will be beside her husband in the El Dorado Springs
