He was born Sept. 11, 1913, to Charles and Luella (Morrison) Guist in Liberty Township, Vernon County. He attended Four Acre and Kickapoo Center schools. On March 14, 1958, he married Beatrice Haynes, and the couple farmed during their married life in rural Viroqua. Russell also worked for Bakkum Mink Ranch for many years.
Russell was always full of fun and thoroughly enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was an avid card player, and in his earlier years, played the banjo. He was a member of Viroqua Church of Christ.
Survivors include two daughters, Vera Nelson and Betty Clark, both of Viroqua; one son, Orville "Orvie" (Barbara) Haynes of rural Sugar Grove, Wis.; seven grandsons, LaVerne (Julie) Nelson of Slinger, Wis., Wayne Nelson of Sabin, Wis., David (Karine) Nelson of Viola, Wis., Mark Haynes of Sugar Grove, Scott (Lisa) Haynes of La Crosse, Benjamin (Sally) Haynes of Viroqua and Shannon (Tammy) Clark of Soldiers Grove; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Elaine Smith of Viroqua; two brothers, Charles (Janet) Guist of Viroqua and Jerry (Annette) Guist of Baraboo, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, Beatrice, he was preceded in death by a grandson in infancy, Kevin Nelson; one brother, Gale Guist; four sisters, Doris Knabel, Thelma Dowling, Delores Swiggum and Leona "Dot" Matthes; and two sons-in-law, Robert Nelson and LeMoine "Bud" Clark.
Funeral services will be Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 1 p.m. at Thorson Funeral Home in Viroqua. Larry Mosher will officiate, with burial in the Viola Cemetery. Friends may call at Thorson Funeral Home on Monday from 4 to 6 p.m., with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m., and also on Tuesday from noon until service time.
