Obituary from probably the "News-Tribune" of Britt, Iowa:
Mrs. E. N. Bailey Died Saturday
Widow of the Once Famous "Bailey of Britt" Succumbs to Broncho Pneumonia
Spent More Than Half Century as Citizen of Hancock County, Most of Time in Britt
Mrs. Martha Bailey, widow of the once famous "Bailey of Britt" died at her home in Britt at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 1931. Had she lived until the 23rd of March she would have been 81 years old. She was born a daughter of Joel and Adeline Stratton at Lyons, Walworth County, Wis., on March 23, 1850.
On Christmas Eve 1868 she united in marriage with Edwin N. Bailey, the ceremony being performed at Saukville, Wis. She came here with her husband and family in 1878 and settled on a farm in Amsterdam Township directly north of Twin Lakes. Their vicinity afterward became known as Bailey's Grove. With the exception of a year spent at Roy, Washington, Mrs. Bailey has spent the entire time since 1878 in Hancock County. Mr. Bailey's aptitude for writing drew him into the newspaper business and the family left their farm and moved to Britt in 1891.
Mrs. Bailey was of a religious nature. Joining with the Methodist church she used her influence through that channel for good, rearing a family of children, two of which to this day are among the most valuable workers of the Britt M. E. church. Mrs. Bailey was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a charter member of the Half Century club.
Eight children were born to Mrs. Bailey, one dying in infancy. Those living are E. L. (Bert) Bailey, of Detroit, Mich.; Edgar L. Bailey, of Sawyer, N. D.; Mrs. Gladys Fillenwarth, of Britt; O. S. Bailey, of Waukon; Mrs. Mattie Heacox, of Britt; Joel D. Bailey, of Orange City; and Miss Alice Bailey of St. Paul, Minn. There survive 19 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, besides a brother, Charles Stratton, of Waupaca, Wis., and two sisters, Mrs. R. D. Pinkerton and Mrs. N. L. Brigham, both of Waupaca, Wis. She lost her husband December 21, 1923, since which time she has lived alone but always close to her daughters. She has also spent some time with her son at Waukon.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church Monday afternoon, the Revs. G. W. Eggleston and W. G. Muhleman in charge. Interment was made in the family lot in Evergreen cemetery, Britt.
