Identified with the life and development of Pasadena for more than half a century, Almon D. Barnard, 69, veteran electric inspector for the City of Pasadena, died Wednesday at a San Bernardino hospital following a short illness.
With his father he brought in and operated the old Sheldon well, the first successful well in the Pasadena area and which some years ago became part of the Pasadena water system.
He operated the first pack train to scenic Switzer's Camp and to Mt. Wilson and was one of the first forest rangers in the West Fork of the San Gabriel.
A native of Lisbon, New Hampshire, Barnard came to Pasadena with his father in 1891 and as a boy worked on ranches in Verdugo, Eagle Rock and on his father's ranch located on land that is now North Marengo avenue.
Surviving him are two daughters, Marion E. Hart of Pasadena and Wilma G. Adams of Everett, Washington; also three grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Reynolds and Eberle Chapel, 825 East Orange Grove avenue, followed by interment in Mountain View cemetery. Rev. John A. Schlichting, pastor of the Mt. Olive Lutheran church, will officiate.
