Dan was born at Bangkok, Siam, March 17, 1857. He is the son of Dan Beach Bradley who was born in Marcellus, New York and went to Siam in 1833, as a missionary. His second wife Sarah Blachly, the mother of Dan F., died in Siam in 1894, and never returned to the United States.

As a young boy Dan was sent back to the U.S. to complete his education. He graduated from Oberlin College in June 1882; graduated from Oberlin Theological Seminary in 1885; received honorary degrees of Doctor of Divinity by Yankton College of South Dakota in 1892, Cornell College, Iowa in 1904 and Oberlin College in 1908.

He was ordained to the Congregational ministry in 1885; pastor of the Yankton Congregational Church and president of Yankton College from 1890 to 1892; pastor of the Park Congregational Church of Grand Rapids, Michigan from 1892 to 1902; resigned to become president of Grinnell College in Iowa till 1905; and in 1905 he came to Cleveland to accept Pastorate of the Pilgrim Congregational Church.

Dan married Lillian Josephine Jaques at Oberlin, Ohio on July 9, 1883. They were the parents of four children; Helen, Rev. Dwight Jaques, Robert Gamble, and Dan Theodore.
