The son of Adam & Catherine (Sterner) Shildt, in 1860, he was a laborer living with and/or working for the John Beall family in Woodsboro District, Frederick County, Maryland, but his family was residing in nearby Union Township, Adams County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 9" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 2, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 4 as a private with Co. G, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.

He married Mary Elizabeth Baughman in 1865 but they apparently divorced. He then married Rachel Weiland and fathered Charles Henry (b. @1870), Elizabeth (b. @1876), James Asbury (b. 09/09/79), Abbey Luella (b. 11/28/80), and two others who apparently died in infancy and are buried at their parents' side. However, seeing "Mary E." on the tombstone gives me pause as to the accuracy of that statement.

Various family trees on Ancestry.com wrongly claim that he died in Jefferson, Alabama. He actually died in Jefferson Township, Newton County, Indiana.
