Velma was my grandmother and a very fine lady. She was very community minded and always active in PTA, Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion Post 288 in La Crescenta CA. She lived just below Montrose CA with her 2nd husband Gilbert Salvage, in a house at 3533 Buena Vista Ave from the 1920s till her death in 1981. It was a different era and time. For years they never had a front door lock- it was never needed as you knew all of your neighbors quite well.
Her door was always open to all neighborhood kids and she would always cook a stupendous Thanksgiving Dinner for our entire clan. She had three orange trees in her yard which supplied us with plenty of fruit and juice. She was a marvelous cook as well as a healer of cuts, bruises,(bruised egos) and scratches.
