Rounsevell Mortuary records of Lead state that she resided at 602 Railroad Avenue in Lead; born in Pennsylvania on July 24, 1853; died of acute cardiac dilatation in Lead on May 15, 1916; buried in the Catholic Cemetery in South Lead at 10:00 a.m. on May 18, 1916; father - John Leonard, born Pennsylvania; certifying physician - Dr. Fehliman; officiating clergyman - McCarty; funeral charged to estate.
Lead Daily Call newspaper, May 15, 1916 - Mrs. Mary Steele died suddenly today at her home on Railroad avenue with the members of her family around her. At about 11 o'clock Mrs. Steele was going about her household duties when she collapsed...She grew steadily worse and passed away at 1 o'clock. Deceased was about sixty years of age and was the widow of the late Albert Steele. She is survived by one son and four daughters, Leonard and Miss Celia Steele, Mrs. Kathryn Wilkinson, Mrs. Carrie Van Dusen and Mrs. Lillian Rainey. Mrs. Callahan of Old Abe street is a sister of Mrs. Steele..."
Lead Daily Call, May 17, 1916 - "...The funeral of the late Mrs. Mary Anna Leonard Steele will take place from St. Patrick's cathedral at 10 o'clock tomorrow, Thursday morning, Rev. T.J. McCarthy officiating...Deceased was born at Pittston, Pa. on July 24, 1853. She came to Lead in pioneer days, by stagecoach from Pierre. She was married here in the summer of 1883 to the late Albert Steele, who for many years was foreman of the Homestake mills...She also leaves two sisters and two brothers. They are Mrs. Charles Stortz of Wilkesbarre, Pa., and Mrs. John Callahan of Lead, Mike Leonard of Belle Fourche and James Leonard of Wilkesbarre, Pa."
