Retired Professor Dies at 78

CANTON, N.Y. — Dr. Mitchell Bennett Garrett, 78, retired professor of history and author, died Thursday at the A. Barton Hepburn Hospital in Ogdensburg after a long illness. In recent years, he had made his home in Crary Mills in the town of Canton.

There will be a private funeral service at 2 p.m. Monday from the Lawrence Funeral Home in Canton with the Rev. Max A. Coots, pastor of the First Universalist Church of Canton, officiating. Burial will be in the Beech Plains Cemetery. Friends are requested to omit flowers. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be from 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm Sunday.

Dr. Garrett was born on April 17, 1881, in Lineville, Alabama, a son of the late Mitchell Bennett Garrett and Matilda McCain Garrett. He received his B.A. degree in 1900 from Howard College [now Samford University] in Homewood, Ala., his M.A. in 1903 from Howard, and his Ph.D. in 1910 from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. He was awarded an honorary LL.D. by Howard in 1942.

From 1904 to 1922, Dr. Garrett was a history instructor at several institutions including Howard College, the University of Mississippi, the University of Michigan, and St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. From 1927-1952, he was a professor of Modern European History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

From 1919-1921, he took a leave of absence from teaching to study and conduct research in France. In 1936, the state of North Carolina awarded him the Mayflower Cup for his book, "The Estates General in 1789." He wrote several other books including, "The French Colonial Question 1789-1791," "Europe Since 1815," "European History, 1500-1815," "Sixty Years of Howard College, 1842-1902," and "The Horse and Buggy Days of Hatchett Creek: An Alabama Boyhood in the 1890s."

Dr. Garrett was a member of the Baptist Church, but had attended the Universalist Church in Canton. He was also a member of the American Historical Association and Southern Historical Association.

Surviving are his wife, Dora Matthews Garrett, who he married on May 12, 1923; a daughter, Barbara Bennett Garrett of Crary Mills; a son, Dr. Allen McCain Garrett, of Silver Springs, Maryland; a sister, Mrs. Robert Blair of Anthony, Florida; and three grandsons.
