Ray was raised in rural Texas. He joined the United States Navy during World War II. After his time in the Navy, he met Grace Cannon, fell in love, and the two were married in Raton, Colfax Co., New Mexico on March 19, 1946. Grace had three boys from a prior marriage. Ray and Grace had two daughters together, Janice and Phyllis. They resided in various places through out Colorado, including Wetmore, Westcliff, White Pine, and Pueblo, Colorado. They filed for divorce in 1955.

Ray worked at several trades through out his life, including farming, ranch hand, and miner. Later he received training and schooling in plumbing.
