VIOLA, Wis. - Duane "Buck" Kanable, 70, of rural Viola, Wis., passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital.

He was born in the town of Sylvan, Richland County, on July 20, 1931, to Leslie and Eula (Norris) Kanable. He married Marilyn Carr on Aug. 14, 1954. They farmed all their married lives in the town of Sylvan. At one time he drove milk truck for the Sylvan Creamery. This winter he worked at S and S Cycle Co.

He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, of which he was a deacon. He was a member of the Ocooch Snowmobile Club. He was a longtime member of the Sylvan Dairy Board of Directors. He had also been a member of the Kickapoo Area School Board.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn of Viola; two sons, Dane (Terri) and Kent (Susie), all of Viola; two daughters, Tammy (Rick) Simonson of Somerset, Wis., and Kristi (Randy) Mikkelson of Stoddard; six grandchildren, Jason and David Kanable, Jamie and Kelly Gratz, Michelle (Kevin) Martin, and Cassie Simonson; three great-grandchildren, Christopher and Sean Sutton, and Kayla Martin; one sister, Janice (Harlan) Drake of La Crosse; and his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Mavis Albrechtson; a nephew, Scott Albrechtson; his father-and mother-in-law, Hurley and Ruth Carr; and one brother-in-law, Donald J. Nelson.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 13, at 1 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Readstown, Wis. Pastor Margaret Hoversten will officiate, and burial will be in the Viola Cemetery. Friends may call at the Sime Funeral Home in Readstown on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday at the church from noon until time of services.

Memorials may be given to the Peace Lutheran Church and the Kickapoo Rescue Squad.
