David A. Thorud, 60, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, at his home in Lucas Valley.

He was born April 15, 1938, in Menomonie to Odin and Olga (Behrents) Thorud. Dave was raised in the Little Elk Creek area on the Thorud homestead farm. When a teenager, he worked for area farmers and hauled can milk.

Dave graduated in 1956 from Menomonie High School. He joined the Navy in 1955, taking his basic training at Wold Chamberlain Naval Air Station in Minneapolis between his junior and senior years. He was part of a Naval Air Helicopter Squadron stationed at Lakehurst, NJ.

David married Joanne "Dode" Stoll on Feb. 18, 1858, at Little Elk Creek Lutheran Church. They lived in Toms River, NJ their first year.

After returning to the Menomonie area, David worked for Dotseth Trucking and Charles Groepper Trucking. He then went to work driving heavy equipment for highway construction for the McClain-Astleford Co., later working on building the Spring Valley dam.

Dave and Dode bought the Valley Bar in January 1965, operating it until July 1983. They bought the Hicks farm in Lucas Valley in 1967, where they lived and raised crossbred beef cattle, which Dave loved. They bought the Phil Hughes farm in 1972 where they had dairy cattle until the fall of 1994.

Dave was a people person. He loved visiting with people, camping, fishing, traveling and collecting farm toys and some antique tractors.

He enjoyed all of his life and through his illness spent as much time outdoors with nature as possible, a lot of it at his camper at O'Neil Creek in Chippewa. Dave was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of AmVets Post 72 of Connorsville.

He is survived by his wife, Dode of Menomonie (Lucas Valley); one brother, Mike Thorud of Cedar Falls; nieces and nephews, Page (Bob) Wurtz of Lawrenceburg, Ind., Barry (Marilyn) Hughes of Denver, Colo., Mary Beth (Ron) Scavo of Blaine, Minn., Terry Hughes of Worthington, Ohio, Tom (Pat) Stoll of Menomonie, and Kathy (Jerry) Miller of Wilson; a brother-in-law, Don (Bonnie) Stoll of Menomonie; a sister-in-law, Jean (Bernie) Hughes of Superior; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Funeral services are 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, at Peace Lutheran Church in Menomonie with the Rev. David Whelan officiating. Burial will be in Lucas Cemetery in the Town of Lucas, Dunn County, with military honors by AmVets Post 72.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today (Sunday) at the Olson Funeral Home in Menomonie and one hour prior to services Monday at the church.
