Army Aviation Accident – Grantham Man Killed – A deplorable accident, involving the death of two men, one a Granthamian, occurred on Wednesday, at Netheravon, the victims being Second-Lieut. R. R. Skene and his passenger, Raymond Keith Barlow, a mechanic in the 3rd Squadron of the Royal Flying Corps. The mishap occurred to a Bleriot monoplane. Lieut. Skene attained his 23rd year a week ago. He was well known at Brooklands and Hendon. He entered a Martinayde monoplane for the London-Manchester race, and also for the race from London to Paris and back. His pilot's certificate was granted him on July 21st, 1913, he having passed the necessary tests at Brooklands with a Bristol biplane. It was in November last that he secured a commission as second-lieutenant in the R.F.C. Special Reserve. Mr. Barlow was a Grantham man, being a son of the late Mr. R. C. Barlow, tobacconist, High Street, and a grandson of Mr. and Mrs, Lewarton, Wharf Road, where his mother still resides. He, too. Was very young, being but twenty-two years of age. At the inquest, on Wednesday evening, the evidence showed the machine went up with pilot, passenger, full tanks, tools and other gear. At the height of about 150ft, it made a left hand bank, and continued to run while banking, this appeared to put a check on its flying speed. The monoplane dived almost vertically, but slightly on its back. Both men died in a few minutes. ---- etc. --- Barlow was engaged for four years and would have completed three in October Held first class certificate as a mechanic. He was the second son.
