Mary was born in Mannington to Perry E. and Margaret McHenry Anderson. She lived her life in Fairmont and Rivesville until the last few years when she resided with her daughter and son-in-law in Crawfordville, Fla.
She was a devoted and loving wife to two husbands who preceded her in death, Roy E. Martin and Jesse Price.
She was employed for a number of years at the Marion County Courthouse and was an employee of Golden Brothers’ Department Store in old downtown Fairmont until the day it closed. She was the lovely lady who greeted you when you walked in the door.
Mary was a charter member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 2373 Auxiliary, appointed to the office of trustee when the auxiliary was organized, and was the first elected president. She served in numerous offices and received numerous honors for her work, including the title “Mrs. Eagle.” She devoted her time over the years to the March of Dimes and the Muscular Dystrophy Association. A lifelong member of the National Democratic Party, she was proud to be a delegate to the party’s conventions throughout her life. Mary was also a familiar face at the Marion County voting polls, where she was a poll worker until the last few years.
She was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Fairmont and a member of Esther Circle. More recently she attended Mission by the Sea in Alligator Point, Fla.
The matriarch of five generations, Mary was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, as well as a caring friend to many people in Fairmont and Crawfordville. In her loving memory she leaves her only surviving sibling, Dorothy Pinson of Garland, Texas; her only child, Dolores (Martin) Clayton and her son-in-law Gary Clayton; two grandchildren, Sharon (Morris) Krantz (husband Murray) of Tallahassee, Fla., and Jeffrey Paul Morris of Parkersburg; and three great-grandchildren, James Bradley Cheatham (wife Anjie) of Tallahassee, Julie Palumbo (husband Lou) of New York City, and Jeffrey Morris II (wife Kim) of Belpre, Ohio. Mary has 10 great-great-grandchildren: Joshua Austin Davis, Sarah Elizabeth Cheatham, Samantha Katherine Cheatham and Emma Rose Cheatham, all of Tallahassee; Laurabeth Giddens, Linsey Ann Giddens, Louis Dillon Palumbo, Makensie Grace Palumbo and Kendall McCall Palumbo, all of New York City; and Nash Morris of Belpre.
She is also survived by step-grandchildren, Linda Straight (husband Gary), Lisa Hutchinson (husband Doug), Rosemary Damis (husband Greg) and Gary Charles Clayton, all of Fairmont, and a step-great-granddaughter, Lisa Krantz of San Antonio, Texas. Mary was also blessed to have numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Those who preceded her in death include her parents, her husbands, Roy E. Martin and Jesse Price; a sister, Ethel Anderson Baker; and six brothers, Lum, Tom, Cecil, Orville, Fred and Glen Anderson.
Her family wishes to thank her Hospice caregivers of these past two weeks, truly “a band of angels” who helped Mary pass to the other side and request that memorial contributions be made in her name to: Hospice Care, 1403 Country Club Road, Fairmont, WV 26554.
Friends may call at the Frey Home for Funerals, (Historic Chapel), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Wednesday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Mary E. Finegan officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
