She was born January 23, 1929 in Dubuque to Peter F. and Ethel Mae Shaw Hinkel. She married Melvin J. Barnett on February 21, 1948. A graduate of Ottumwa High School in 1947, Dorothy was a homemaker. She was an excellent cook and loved making crafts for others, enjoyed sewing and music shows.
Surviving are her husband, Melvin; two sons, Daryl(Nancy)Barnett and Russell Barnett both of Ottumwa; three daughters, Judith(Jerry)Johnson of Agency, Jane(John)Yochum of Batavia, Leanna(Paul)Simpson of Holt, KS; a daughter-in-law, Diana Barnett of Ottumwa; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Anna Belle Robertson of Ottumwa.
She was preceded in death by a son, Steven Barnett; a great-granddaughter; three brothers, Harold, Bill and Harland Hinkel; three sisters, Ferne Moore, Donna Brumbaugh and Eileen Young.
Funeral services will be 1 pm Saturday at Reece Funeral Home with Jason Brooks officiating. Burial will be in the Agency Cemetery. Visitation begins at 11 am Friday with the family present from 5-7:30 pm Friday. Memorials may be made to the family.
