My great-great-grandfather, Samuel Mahaffey emigrated, with his mother and five brothers, to Marion County, Ohio in 1848. The document, "Irish immigrants: New York Port Arrival records, 1846-1851" documents him as born in Ireland, embarking from Glasgow, Scotland in steerage, arriving in the US June 12, 1848, with 148 other passengers." Married Margaret Jane Campbell in 1859. They had 6 children, only one of whom survived past age 15, Francis J. Mahaffey. The other children were Eva, Edger, Harvey, William and an unnamed infant. "Samuel farmed and in 1880 was elected Marion County Commissioner, serving two terms. His name is on the cornerstone of the county courthouse. He was mayor of Marion,OH between 1897-1898, during the Spanish-American War. He was the president of the County Commissioners and was admired for protecting the farmers of the county from unjust taxation." (Marion Mirror). Also ran a store for 6 years in Marion, OH.
