Geo. Bone, Son of Hewitt Bone who was killed at Wataga, July 29, was killed last Saturday evening. He was engineer on the fast passenger train between Peoria and Galesburg, that leaves about 4:00 P. M., and was about 20 minutes late in starting out of Peoria and when a short distance from the depot the engine left the track and after running about 500 feet on the ties plunged down an embankment turning completely around and falling on Mr. Bone who lived but a short time after being taken out, and the fireman Mr. Maxwell had one leg broken and was otherwise injured. When the engine left the track they were running at a high rate of speed; the engineer and fireman both stuck to their post and shut of the steam and put on the air. They could have saved themselves by jumping but prefered death rather than desert their posts of duty and endanger the lives of the passengers. Geo. Bone was 23 years of age and leaves a wife and adopted daughter. He commenced firing on the road four years ago and was soon given an engine. His death coming so soon after his father's is a double affliction to the family. The funeral was held Tuesday the remains were taken to Viola and buried by the side of his two children. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Bone and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McGrew attended the funeral. The accident was caused by some children who were playing along the track, placing a spike length ways on the rail and when the wheel struck it the engine left the track.
