He was in the newspaper business in TN. He moved back to VA ca 1846 (his father died in autumn 1846 in TN). ELT's uncle Joseph Hutchings Travis left property to him in 1856.

Apparently Edward "Ned" Travis owned 47 slaves in 1850, and 110 slaves in 1860, so this was at least part of the "property" left to him by his uncle Joseph in 1856. (Civil War Veterans of Northeast Tarrant County [TX], Joseph Hutchins Travis; by Michael Patterson)
