Charles Wellington Gray, 91, of Country Way, Troy (Town of Brunswick), died Friday, September 5, 2008 at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy, following a brief illness. Born, raised and educated in Troy, he was the son of the late Theodore and Lillis L. Gray Wickware. He attended Troy Business College and then served in the U.S. Army during World War II, receiving an honorable discharge as a staff sergeant. Following his service to our country, he went to work for the John Hancock Life Ins. Co. as a life insurance agent and served with them for approximately 55 years before his retirement. Mr. Gray served on the board of directors for the Salvation Army, was president of the Lansingburgh High School PTA, regional vice president of the NYS Life Underwriters Assoc., founder of the Northeast NY Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, member of Mt. Zion Lodge of F. & A.M. and a member of the Troy Vocal Society. He is survived by his wife, Mary "Mara" R. Gray of Troy; two sons, The Rev. Bruce A. Gray of Richmond, Va. and Kenneth P. Gray of Alfred, N.Y.; three stepchildren; 17 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, the late Robert S. Gray. A memorial funeral service will be held on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 10 North Main Avenue (at the corner of Madison and N. Main Avenues), Albany, N.Y. with his son, The Rev. Bruce A. Gray and The Rev. Mary R. White, Rector, officiating. The interment will be at Elmwood Hill Cemetery in Troy. The family requests that those desiring make contributions in memory of Mr. Gray to the charity of their choice.
