Sam Appell, 81, of Waco, died Friday at a local nursing home.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 1999, at Oakwood Cemetery with the Rev. Douglas Tucker officiating.

Mr. Appell was born May 19, 1918, in Waco, and was active in commercial real estate and civic affairs for almost 50 years. He was a graduate of Baylor University and served in World War II as an intelligence officer. He was a member of St. Alban's Episcopal Church.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Appell of Waco; three daughters, Carol Kehl and husband David of Charleston, S.C., Martha Susan Dickie and husband Ted of Gatesville and Sarah E. Appell of Waco; one son, Charles S. Appell III of Belton; one sister, Marie McCracken of Texarkana; one brother, Melbourne Appell of Waco; six grandchildren, Jennifer Appell, Marc Appell, Kristin Lucido and her husband Jeff; David Kehl III, Mike Moody and Anne Marie Brady and her husband Mark; and one great granddaughter, Samantha Brady.
