"Mrs. Josephine Zika, Aged Resident Dies"

Mrs. Josephine Zika, elderly resident of this city [Edwardsville], died at the home of her son, William Zika, at 640 East Orchard Street Friday night at 8:50 o'clock. Death was due to complication of old age.

Mrs. Zika was born on March 16, 1853 in Hvozany Czechoslovakia. She was formerly Miss Josephine Sloupa. She married Michael Zika on May 13, 1873. Following their marriage, they came to this country, first going to St. Louis and later to what is now Glen Carbon.

Mr. and Mrs. Zika celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1923, slightly less than a year before Mr. Zika died on February 5, 1924. Mr. Zika was engaged in the charcoal industry, taking charcoal to St. Louis, where it was sold.

After living in Glen Carbon for many years, Mr. and Mrs. Zika moved to a farm 5 miles north of Edwardsville, living there 12 years and then coming to Edwardsville in 1923, about a year before his death.

Nine children were born to them, seven of whom survive:

John Zika of Okawville
Mrs. Anna Palek of Okawville
Mrs. Mary Bernasek of Edwardsville
Michael Zika of Edwardsville
William Zika of Edwardsville
Charles Zika of Marine
Frank Zika of Edwardsville
Josephine Zika – who died in infancy
and Joseph Zika – who died September 14, 1920

Twenty-six grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren also survive.

Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the residence at 640 East Orchard. Mrs. Clarence Bishop of the J.C.D., a unity of Bohemian Ladies, will have charge of the services. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. The body will lie in state at the Straube Funeral Home until Sunday when it will be taken to the residence.
