Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Caldwell County, Kentucky, he graduated from West Point in 1856, was commissioned an officer in the US Army 3rd Artillery and fought in the Indian wars on the frontier. At the start of the Civil War, he resigned his commission and raised a company in the Confederate 3rd Kentucky Infantry. Promoted Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 8th Kentucky Infantry in 1862, he surrendered after a conflict at Fort Donelson and was confined to a Union prison. He was prisoner exchanged in September 1862, promoted Colonel and led the 8th Kentucky at Vicksburg, Mississippi. In 1863, he command of two regiments of cavalry and engaged in actions at Knoxville, Tennessee. He took part in the campaign in Mississippi, was promoted Brigadier General in June, 1864 and commanded the Department of Western Kentucky until the Confederate surrender. After the war, he was a farmer and a Kentucky state prison commissioner.
