MSGR. CASEY TO LIE IN STATE IN CATHEDRAL

Mass for the Rt. Rev. Msgr. George J. Casey, 59, vicar general of the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Chicago, will be said at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Name cathedral, 730 N. Wabash av. He died of a stroke Friday.
Church officials said the body will lie in state in the cathedral from 2 p.m. tomorrow until the mass, and that burial will be in Queen of Heaven cemetery, Hillside. Other details of the services will be arranged when Cardinal Meyer returns tonight from a brief vacation trip to Wisconsin.
Msgr. Casey died in Mercy hospital at 8:45 p.m. Friday after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage at 6:15 p.m. in the rectory of the cathedral.
Native of Chicago
A native Chicagoan, Msgr. Casey had served as vicar general since 1943, a post that entitled him to all the juridical authority of the cardinal archbishop of Chicago. He served 36 years as a clergyman, under Cardinals Mundelein, Stritch, and Meyer.
In 1946, he was paid the highest honor accorded to a monsignor when Pope Pius XII named him a proto notary apostolis in recognition of his work with the 2 million parishoners in the Chicago archdiocese.
Born Aug. 8, 1903, in the west side St. Mel's parish, the monsignor received most of his education in the Chicago area. He was ordained Sept. 24, 1927, at St. Mary of the Lake seminary, Mundelein.
Studied in Rome
He then took graduate studies in Rome, beginning a doctor of canon law at Rome's Gregorian university in 1929. A church spokesman said the monsignor was one of only two or three canon lawyers with doctorates in the Chicago area.
He was elevated to monsignor in 1939, was named vicar general by the late Cardinal Stritch, and served an administrator of the archdiocese after the cardinal died on May 27, 1958, until the appointment of Cardinal Meyer the next November. Cardinal Meyer reappointed him vicar general after his enthronement the same year.
Msgr. Casey also was president of the New World publishing company, publisher of the Catholic newspaper in the Chicago area. His offices were in the church chancery office, 719 N. Wabash av.
Critic of IPAC
He was an outspoken critic of the Illinois Public aid commission's proposal last year for a tax-supported birth control assistance program.
He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Regina Casey Heaney, and a nephew, the Rev. Thomas Heaney, who was ordained last spring and appointed an assistant in the parish of St. Thomas the Apostle.
Msgr. Casey survived both his brothers, who also were clergymen. The Rev. William P. Casey, director of Catholic cemeteries in the Chicago archdiocese, died in 1951. The Rev. Vincent P. Casey, pastor of St. Norbert's parish, Northbrook, died in 1956.
