Abigail Hall Brown was born 20 May 1813 in New York State.
Abigail married Jerome B. Brown on 20 Oct 1836 (they were both living in Smithfield, NY at the time of their marriage). They moved to Wisconsin in 1840 locating at Mayville. In 1867 they moved to New Lisbon, Wisconsin.
Abigail & Jerome had 5 sons and 2 daughters together. Sadly one of their daughters died in infancy/childhood. The children who survived into adulthood were:
1. Jerome B. Brown, Jr. (1837-?)
2. Oscar V. Brown (1839-1864)
3. Orville M. Brown (1840-1867)
4. Maria R. Brown (1844-1906)
5. Sydney E. Brown (1847-1922)
6. William Wallace Brown (1851-1884)
Abigail's husband Jerome made his living as a farmer, but he struggled due to health problems (arthritis). Abigail supplemented their income by making rugs. She was apparently talented as people came from "afar" to purchase her hand made rugs.
Sadly Abigail and her husband Jerome lost their son, Oscar, who was a Private in Company K of the 1st Wisconsin Cavalry, during the Civil War on 18 Sept 1864 in Nashville, Tennessee.
Their nephew, William Ellis Brown (AKA "Ellis") had also joined the 1st Wisconsin Calvary as a Private, but Eliis had served in a different company than their son. Ellis married his first cousin, Maria R. Brown, who was Abigail & Jerome's daughter.
Maria, whom Ellis married during the war, lived with Jerome & Abigail during the Civil War. And when Ellis returned from the war suffering serious illness & injury as a Prisoner of War at Andersonville, GA continued to live with Jerome & Abigail and they all moved together to New Lisbon, WI in 1867.
Abigail & Jerome's son, Sydney E. Brown, was a jeweler and the mayor of Merrillan, Wisconsin. He was mentioned in both of her obituaries. He provided an affidavit for Maria R. Brown, for a Civil War Widow's Pension in which he testifies that he was Maria's brother (and Maria was William Ellis Brown's wife).
