Molly was a daughter of John Roane, Sr. (1736-1805) and Mary Susannah Jones Roane (b. 1742), born at "Uppowac" in King William County. Her brother, John Roane, Jr. was a distinguished statesman and representative from Virginia to the United States Congress. She married Captain James B. Ruffin of "Sweet Hall" on March 16, 1782 in King William County. They would become parents to seven children. She continued living at Sweet Hall after her husband died and until she also passed away.
