AMHERST - Frederick Frank Hunger, 82 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Amherst Hospital following a one-year battle with Mantle Cell Leukemia.

He was Born October 15, 1926 in Lorain, OH, where he was raised graduating from Lorain High School with the class of 1944. Amherst has been his home since 1960.

He served with the United States Navy during World War II aboard the U.S.S. Vulcan and the U.S.S. Rehabath ships as an Electricians Mate receiving the Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon. Fredrick was a master mechanic for the fifty-nine years and used his skills at the Gulf Station at Brownell and West Erie and the Sohio Station at 14th Street and Broadway, both in Lorain, which he owned and operated. He demonstrated his enjoyment of NASCAR Racing and Stock Car Racing by racing a car that he owned with Al Bevan on the old dirt track at the Amherst Speedway. He also enjoyed bowling. A sixty-nine year member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lorain, he served as past Decon. Fredrick was a lifetime member of the BPO Elks Lodge #1301, both in Lorain.

Survivors include his wife of sixty years Katherine M. (Greer) Hunger, his son Ronald Frank Hunger and his wife Della of Amherst; his grandchildren Heidi Carrillo and her husband Armado of Sugarloaf, CA and Ronnie Hunger of Cottageville,WV; his brothers Tom Hunger and wife Carol of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Jack Edward Hunger and his wife Helene of Rocky River, OH, and Charles Hunger and his wife Margaret of Fayettefille, NC; and his sister Marilyn (White) Hunger of Gettysburg, PA.

He was preceded in death by his parents Fredrick Hunger and Florence (Miller) Hunger and his sister Ann (Engel) Hunger.

Friends may call Friday, April 10, 2009, from 5-8pm at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland, Ave., Amherst. Funeral services with the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard performing honors will be held Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 10am from the funeral home. The Rev. Carl Richter, pastor of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Lorain, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst, Township.
