James served in the Civil Air Patrol as a commander. He graduated from Methodist Medical Center School of Nursing in 1997 and was a registered nurse at Methodist. He graduated from the United Technical Institute in Milwaukee in 1966 and was the chief technician on the first successful heart transplant in the Midwest. He also was a paramedic for OSF Saint Francis Medical Center and managed the Mobile Medic Ambulance Service for many years. Graduate of Illinois Central College, Sangamon State University and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He was an accountant for Ragan Communications and was a volunteer for 10 years for West Peoria Fire and Rescue Squad, last serving as an assistant chief.
