He is survived by a daughter, Laura (Allen) Cavender of North Aurora, IL; two sons, David M. (Jill) Smith and Stephen M. Smith; both of Joplin, MO; seven grandchildren, Faith, Sarah, Rachel, Luke and Noah Cavender, Daniel and David Schultz; his brother, Richard A. (Mary Jean) Smith of Elmhurst, IL and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David H. and Viola Smith; and a daughter, Suzanne M. Meissner.
Mr. Smith grew up in Belleville, was a 1952 graduate of Cathedral High SChool and attended Belleville Township Junior College. He went on to receive his degree in Journalism from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana in 1956 and later served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Smith began working as a reporter for the Belleville News Democrat and later switched to a long career in advertising for various companies in Kansas City, MO, Springfield, IL, Kalamazoo, MI and Elkhart, IN. He retired from Nicor Gas Co., Naperville in 1991 after 17 years. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Naperville and enjoyed reading.
Visitation Thursday, June 17, 5:00-8:00 p.m. at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.
Services will begin Friday, June 18, 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home and will proceed to a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville.
Interment Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Naperville.
