Between 1859 and 1878 the family lived in Leeds, Auburn, Paris, Rumford and Turner, Maine, as well as in Quebec, Canada. Benjamin was employed as a hack driver and teamster. Some time in the mid 1870s, the family permanently settled in Leeds where Benjamin owned a farm.

He died of a stroke in 1914.
