Richard M. Steeber, age 86, of Kellnersville, WI died on Sunday, April 29, 2012 at Manitowoc Health Care Center. Dick was born September 18, 1925 in Denmark, WI, son of the late Michael Steeber and Anna (Sladky) Steeber. He attended St. Joseph's Catholic Grade and High School in Kellnersville. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1943. Dick served in the Army Air Force, during WWII as a Staff Sergeant. He was stationed in England, France and South America. After serving his country, Dick attended Badger Business College in Green Bay. On September 9, 1950, Dick married his childhood sweetheart, Evelyn Ruzek at All Saint's Catholic Church in Denmark. In 1951 Dick and Evie along with his brother, Russell purchased Steeber's Store in Kellnersville which they operated until 1992. In 1953, Dick was appointed postmaster of Kellnersville, retiring in 1989. In 2001, Dick was fortunate to be a recipient of a kidney transplant after many months of dialysis. Because of this, he and his family are strong supporters of Gift of Life organ donations. His love for his community, sports, and family was evident in his daily life. Dick was part of the Kellnersville baseball team that won the Manitowoc County League championship in 1951. He was also on the Kubsch's bowling championship team, and played league darts for the VFW team. He enjoyed an occasional round of golf and enjoyed watching sports. He was a very kind, gentle, caring and dedicated man, always ready to help whenever help was needed. Thru the years Dick held positions in Kellnersville as the Boy Scout Master, Pee Wee Boys Baseball Coach, volunteer fireman, village president, member of the Kellnersville Betterment Assoc., and K-City Senior Citizens. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Kellnersville where he was an usher, an officer of the Men's Holy Name, President of the St. Joseph Church Council and President of the Home School Association. Dick was involved with the Kubale-O'Connell VFW Post #6179 of Kellnersville serving as Commander and Quartermaster. He was a member of Friends of Branch River, Manitowoc County Historical Society, Old Timers Baseball League, Wisconsin Czechs, Knights of Columbus, and NARFE (National Assoc. Retired Federal Employees). He was the 8th district director of the Wisconsin Grocers Assoc. and president of the Manitowoc Grocers Association. Dick also served as president of the Manitowoc County Postmasters. Dick and Evie enjoyed trips abroad and in the USA. His last flight was in April 2011 as he was honored to be part of the "Old Glory Honor Flight" for the WWII Veterans to Washington D.C. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Evelyn Steeber of Kellnersville, two sons; Richard (Rick) Steeber of DePere and Mark Steeber of Manitowoc, two daughters; Kristy (Jerry) Omernick of West Bend and Kathleen (Kathy) Kochan of Kellnersville. He is also survived by seven grandchildren; Ariel and Libby Steeber, Courtney and Jake Omernick and Michelle, Dan and Angela Kochan. He is further survived by his brothers; Russell (Ione) Steeber and Donald (Millie) Steeber, his sisters; Jeanette Zeman and Carol (Erv) Lambert, his brother-in-laws; Lester (Betty) Ruzek and Charles Ruzek, and his sister-in-law; Bernice (August) Suemnicht. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by; his parents, his daughter-in-law, Amy Cayemberg and his in-laws; Charles and Libbie Ruzek, Emil Blahnik, Frank Zeman and Charlotte Ruzek, and his nieces; Carolyn and Valla Jean. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 4, 2012 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Kellnersville. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Ron Colombo. Burial will take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post #6179.
